Homemade Phyllo Cups

Today my post is not a really recipe. It’s a step by step instruction on how to make these wonderful phyllo cups. You can buy the phyllo cups or make them at home. I suggest you make them by yourself. Why do you need them? You can prepare various appetizers or desserts with them. Their fillings can be very varied.

Sometimes when you make a cake and you have leftover cream, you can make these baskets and fill them with it, decorate them with fruit and you will get a wonderful, non-standard dessert.

In my next post I offer you a salty version of these baskets, some appetizers with zucchini and cream cheese.

Also they can be eaten warm or cold and with sweet or savory fillings. These crispy crunchy pastry bites are perfect for dinners, lunches, buffets or just a little snack for a party. You can prepare them in advance. All you need is a muffin pan and some store-bought phyllo pastry.

Serving: 12 cups


  • 4 phyllo sheets
  • 40 g butter, melted

How to make it

Preheat the oven to 350°F.Melt the butter in the microwave. Grease the muffins pan. Use 4 phyllo sheets to make these 12 cups. Cut into 12 squares. Take one square and keep the others covered so they don’t dry out.

I’ll show you two methods for making them.

The first one: Take the first sheet, brush it with butter and place it into the muffin. Brush the other one and place over the first. Repeat with the remaining two phyllo sheets and you get a small basket.

The second method is: Take one sheet as one square has 4 sheets. Brush the first sheet with butter and place on some parchment paper, brush the second sheet and place it on the first one but the corners of the squares should align. Do the same with the following two sheets still making sure the corners don’t overlap. You will get something that looks like a star. Now take it and put it in the muffin pan. Repeat with the remaining squares.

Brush the remaining melted butter over phyllo sheet cups. Bake for 7-8 minutes, until golden brown.

    1. Hi Claire! If you make your phyllo cups one day ahead and want to keep them crispy, I would recommend keeping them in an airtight container at room temperature. Do make sure, however, that they are completely cooled down before storing them to avoid any condensation that can soften them. Also, fill them with your cream only right before serving because if you fill them up ahead of time and they stay like that for a few hours, they will get soft. Hope this helps! 🙂

  2. Hi can I make the phyllo cups in advance and freeze them but when I’m ready to use them do I thaw them out before filling them and place in oven with a Brie filling

    1. Hello! I don’t recommend thawing them as it will make them soggy. Put them directly in the oven. Hope this helps! 🙂
